Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch, is an English actor born on 19th July 1976, at London, England. He is the son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham. 

He started his career in acting with plays in Theatres, and got the chance to act in a number of great plays. His television debut happened through guest appearances in the year 2000. Later he acted in Silent Witness (2002), Fortysomething (2003), as Stephen Hawking in Hawking (2004), as Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock (2010-2017), The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (2016), etc. 

His films include roles as Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate (2013), as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game (2014) and as Dr. Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films.


Benedict Cumberbatch Religion

Cumberbatch was raised in London, but it is not sufficient to recognize his religion. He has always shown a connection towards Buddhism. Before pursuing a career in acting, he worked as an English teacher at a Tibetan monastery in India. 

He talked about his experiences with the monks as, “They taught me about the duplicity of human nature but also the humanity of it, and the ridiculous sense of humour you need to live a full spiritual life”. He often practises meditation and yoga.

Opinion of Cumberbatch in political matters is quite simple to understand. He has raised voice against British Prime Minister David Cameron several times, and has revealed that he would like to play ‘posh’ roles as it make him seem removed from the common Brit. He joined the Stop the War Coalition protest in 2003 against the Iraq War. 

He describes himself as a feminist. He was a signatory of the International Women’s Day 2014’s Amnesty International letter to PM David Cameron for women’s rights in Afghanistan. He also supports LGBT+.

Benedict Cumberbatch was in a relationship with the English actress and screen writer Olivia Poulet during a period from 1999 to 2011. He also dated Anna Jones from 2011 to 2012. He is rumoured to have dated the American actress Dakota Johnson, English actress Lara Pulver, and American actress Liv Tyler. 

Cumberbatch is now married the English theatre and opera director Sophie Hunter, and have two sons, Christopher Carlton and Haul Auden. They got engaged in 2014 after a friendship of 17 years, and later in February 2015 in the Isle of Wight, got married.

Cumberbatch seems to be so much interested in reading, as he selects his characters very wisely and each one is of real importance. He also likes horse riding and scuba diving and motor bikes.


Interesting Facts

    • Cumberbatch gave his voice for Shere Khan in the film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.

    • He was regarded as a British cultural icon in April 2014, as he was one of the people that young adults from abroad will name when thinking about the UK culture.

    • He is a vegan.

    • Cumberbatch and two friends got abducted in 2005 while traveling through South Africa by a group of locals. The abductors set them free after sometime in an unsettled territory without any reason.
