Woody Allen


Woody Allen is one of the most celebrated and respected name in the film industry worldwide. He is an actor, director, comedian, playright and musician. Some of the best movies he is known for are Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Stardust Memories, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Match Point. He is a recepient of six Academy Awards and nine British Academy Awards. Comedy Central ranked Allen 4th in 100 Best Comedians of all time. Woody has been received other coveted awards like Golden Globes, Director's Guild of America Awards, Saturn Awards, American Comedy Awards, BAFTA and awards at Berlin International Film Festival among others. He has a documentary made on him, "Woody Allen: A Documentary", on PBS and a cable television documentary too. Eric Lax and Stuart Hample have authored books about him.

Allen is not a believer of God. In fact, he called himself a "militant Freudian atheist". His paternal granparents were Russian Jewish immigrants and maternal grandparents were Austrian Jews.

Woody Allen like most other Jewish, Hollywood elite and atheists supports the Democrats. Incidentally, he was a big fan of ex-President Barack Obama, and has been disgruntled about the frequent deadlock in the Congress.

Woody has had several relationships throughout his entire span of career. He was married to Harleen Rosen, Louise Lasser, and Soon Yi Previn. Apart from that, he had been involved in long-term romantic relationships with Mia Farrow, Stacey Nelkin, and Diane Keaton. 

Woody Allen Hobbies

Apart from being a prolific filmmaker, Allen has also directed and acted in theatres. Extremely passionate about jazz, he took up playing clarinet in his childhood, with a stage name as Woody Herman. His band was the New Orleans Jazz Band which even played at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. 

Interesting Facts

Woody Allen was once engaged in a custody battle with Mia Farrow. He was even accused of sexual abuse against his adopted daughter Dylan. However, no concrete information could be gathered to convict him. 

He is said to have undergone psychoanalysis for 37 years. Nevertheless, he is still said to be claustrophobic and agoraphobic. 

His latest project is he film Wonder Wheel starring Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake. 

Allen can speak French.

He was once invited to be at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He has been voted one among the 19 Best Directors of all time by Entertainment Weekly.

This vegetarian mega-director is a drop-out of New York University.
