Katharine Ross


Katharine Juliet Ross, the American film, stage, and television actress was born on 29th January 1940, at California, U.S. She is the daughter of Katherine Mullen, and Dudley Ross, a Navy officer. Her acting career started while studying in the Santa Rosa Junior College, where she took part in the production of The King and I. This inspired her to leave college and move to San Francisco. 

She had her film debut through the film Shenandoah (1965), and later signed a long term contract with the Universal studios. Her role in Mike Nichols’ film The Graduate (1967) earned her an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award.

She spent her time in the 1990s in semiretirement, but later came back to the industry through films like Donnie Darko and The Hero. Ross is an established author too, and has published several children’s books including Little Ballerina.

She has Scottish, English, German, and Canadian ancestry. The American actress has not stated anything much about her religious beliefs or customs. She always was hesitant about her faith and spiritual life.

Ross married actor Joel Fabiani in 1960, but the couple had their divorce after two years of married life. She later married John Marion in 1964. They got divorced in 1967. She stopped acting temporarily after her marriage with Conrad Hall. 

Ross rejected several roles including the one in The Towering Inferno. She and Hall got separated and divorced in 1973. She was married to Gaetano “Tom” Lisi sometimes before 1978. Later in 1984, she married Sam Elliott, her co-star in the films The Legacy and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, four months before the birth of their only child, Cleo Rose Elliott. 


Katharine Ross Hobbies

She is an established writer, and has published a number of books including Grover, Grover come on over!, The Teeny, Tiny Farm, The Fuzzytail Friends’ Great Egg Hunt, and Bear Island. She also loves reading books, mostly books with innovative and variety concepts and plot. She considers acting as her hobby, even though she had a semi-retirement period some time ago. 

Ross likes to spend her free time in the outdoors of her home. She has an interest in gardening, but admits the fact that she is not taking care of her garden as she has dreamed of. 


Interesting Facts

    • Ross appeared nude on stage for her role in Jean Genet’s The Balcony in her initial years of acting. 

    • There was an incident in which Ross got stabbed with scissors by her daughter Cleo. Ross had to ask for a restraining order against her, in order to remain protected from her attacks.
